What Happens Next?

The whole idea of dying honestly scares the crap out of me. I think about it and when I do I think about all the possibilities of what could possibly happen next. Is there really a heaven or hell? Is there a life in between that? Is it just like going to sleep and never waking up? Is there actually another realm to go to? There are so many unanswered questions and I feel like the worst part of it all is we have no way of what happens next.

Personally what I would LIKE to believe is that once we die, we all go to our idea world. We are alone in whatever we personally consider is perfect and peaceful. There we will find whatever answers to questions we had that were unanswered before we passed. There we will recognize mistakes that we made throughout life. Then with time we will meet up with the ones we love in another environment. We will be able to see our loved ones who are still alive on Earth, and we could visit them. But in reality, I feel like it I will just fall asleep and not wake up. Soon I will be forgotten, and that's okay. The after life is very complicated, as there are no concrete answers.

  1. It would be amazing to be able to go to our own ideal world once we die. Surrounded by our loved ones, favorite foods, places, etc. it would literally be a dream come true. I think the unknown of death is scary, but I also think it's needed. If we knew life after death was amazing, so many more people would want to die, and even try to die especially since this world can be so cruel. Not knowing if it's good or bad gives us the chance to really live life to it's fullest. Would you prefer to know what happens after life, or keep it in the unknown?

  2. I totally get the fear of dying, and how it all comes from the uncertainty of the afterlife, if there is one. It's so scary to realize that we actually have no idea what happens after we die. I really like how your ideal world after death is one where we all get to be happy and peaceful, but we also recognize mistakes that we made in life. I think that's really important. Why do you feel that the "reality" can't be a perfect afterlife? I think, for me at least, that more dismal things like falling asleep and not waking up seem more realistic because they take less faith and energy to believe in.

  3. Catherine's post, "What happens after?" is very similar. I just realized that the titles of the posts are almost the same too. I also want to believe that something happens after we pass. However, even as child, with church every Sunday, I found heaven hard to believe. My mom has told me about all the questions I asked, and how some of them just didn't have answers. It would be really nice to think that our lives amount to something, that we have a purpose for being here. I just can't make myself believe in an afterlife, though, or religion for that matter. It seems like those would be a good way to guide your life instead of wandering aimlessly, not truly wanting anything other than happiness. How much has wanting an afterlife affected your current life? Do you think that wanting to have a good afterlife is the main motivation for many people's behaviors? Are they acting how they do only to be rewarded in death?

    1. How funny that our posts are that similar. Wanting an afterlife has not affected me in any way whatsoever. It's not something I think about on a daily basis. When the topic comes up in conversation, it is just something to think about. Many people have many motivations, not just an afterlife. If that's ones motivation, then let it be and let them be driven from the idea of it. I have no idea whether individuals acts on what they want after death. Personally, no. I don't act anyway due to anything else that even remotely relates to the afterlife. And as I have said before, if someone does act in a certain way because of something they want or wish for, so be it.
