Love and Friendship

Love is like the wild rose-briar,
Friendship like the holly-tree—
The holly is dark when the rose-briar blooms
But which will bloom most constantly?
The wild rose-briar is sweet in spring,
Its summer blossoms scent the air;
Yet wait till winter comes again
And who will call the wild-briar fair?
Then scorn the silly rose-wreath now
And deck thee with the holly’s sheen,
That when December blights thy brow
He still may leave thy garland green
I was drawn to this poem because it was listed under the friendship category. I like how it shows there can be many types of love that you possess for people. It is possible to love your friends. I really liked how relatable this poem was to me, especially the line that says "But which will bloom most constantly?". I think this plays right into the idea that friends will always be there for you and they will always have your back. Relationships with romantic love can sometimes overshadow the simple love that is found within friendships, and I think this poem illustrates that. Love in friendships are loyal, long-lasting, caring, and strong. Friendship are able to endure a lot of adversity due to the strength of love we hold within our bonds with our friends. It also serves as a reminder to appreciate the bonds you have with your friends, because you will most likely have your friends longer than your significant other, and despite any overshadowing, your friends will still love you and be there for you.
