Black and White Ideal Picture

I really like this work of art.  Theres a simplicity to black and white photos that makes them more appealing to me.  Color takes away, it's distracting.  Without color in an image, your brain can simply enjoy what you're seeing instead of focusing on the different aspects of color (balance, light, if the colors go well together or not, etc).  Black and white photography is more calming.  Color, while beautiful, can be chaotic and overwhelming sometimes.

Something specific to this picture is the mood.  The way you view the photo is largely based on your emotions.  It can be calm, ominous, happy, peaceful -- all depending on how you feel when you look at it.  It acts as a mirror.  How someone feels about it reflects how they feel at the moment, how they feel about themselves, or how they feel about life in general.  To me, all good art is able to do that.

  1. Wow, I never would have thought as color being a distraction in a work of art, but once you mentioned it I really thought about how it could take away from the amazing details in a piece of work. I definitely agree that this piece is calming. I also agree with the fact that you can view this in many different ways when trying to distinguish the mood/tone of it. Do you dislike colorful pieces of art? I really enjoyed this piece! I now have a different perspective on black and white art, as I always viewed it as dark and negative almost.

  2. They way you speak about this work of art is inspiring. Like Alyssa, I wouldn't have thought about how color can take away the relevance in a work of art until you pointed that out. I really like how you said the way you view this photo is a reflection; it got me thinking how really every work of art is a mirror to how you are feeling at that moment in time while viewing the work of art. You said that color is beautiful, but that it also can be chaotic and overwhelming, this kind of reflects back to the philosophy that we are learning in class. What do you think the philosophers we are leaning about would say about this work of art?

  3. I never thought of a black and white picture the way you do. I just saw it as an absence of color. Your comment about how color can be overwhelming sometimes is like with some colorblind people, if they're living in a black and white world, when color is first introduced they appear to be so overwhelmed because it's a foreign sight. The stereotype attached to black and white pictures is that they're dark and gloomy, so to have a refreshing idea of that it could have any feeling attached to it is good to think about. Do you normally take your pictures in the black and white effect or do you just prefer to look at black and white images?
