Music's Effects Blog #4

My research has really lead me down an interesting path in learning about music. I come from a very musical family, so I really enjoyed researching about music and it's effects on human beings. Through the many articles and books I read, I have learned a lot about the negative effects of music as well as the positive influences it has on human beings. My paper is going to begin with talking about the many things music helps humans with such as autism, aphasia, tourette's syndrome, trance, and memory. Then, I will focus the rest of my paper on how it can negatively effect our lives. For example, music can actually induce seizures in some people, and many of these people have to avoid very specific genres of music. Music is also just as likely to have negative effects on people with autism or tourette's syndrome as it is to be therapeutic!

I think the most interesting thing I have learned so far is that some people have musical hallucinations. These hallucinations are often so loud and disruptive that the it impedes on the individual's life. People who are losing their hearing are the most common to develop these hallucinations, which I think is very interesting. It's only fascinating that these individual can get cochlear implants, and their hallucinations can greatly diminish! I still have questions as to what really causes these hallucinations- but it seems that scientists and doctors still don't have the answer to that. This research topic has really shown me how powerful music it, and just how influential it is on the lives of humans. It is crazy to me that something our own race has created can have so much control over us!

  1. Sarah, I really love where you chose to go with this paper! I want to read it so bad! I think some of the medical aspects of your project are really awesome, such as the cochlear implants. Are the musical hallucinations only experienced when these individuals listen to a certain song or tone/pitch? I'm compelled to look all this up! It sounds like you're really involved and interested in this paper. Good work :)

  2. There is not one single day that goes by that I don't listen to music; music is a huge part of my life as I'm sure it is for a lot of people as well! The effects music has on one person can be completely different compared to the effects music has on someone else, which can be very interesting. Out of every route you could have taken with your research paper regarding the topic of music, what was your reason for narrowing music down to its effects on people with certain disorders? Also, I never knew that people could have musical hallucinations, do you know exactly what a musical hallucination is or consists of? Although they are probably awful for the person experiencing them, I wonder what they are like.

  4. Music is such a powerful thing. It speaks for people who don't have the courage or words to speak with their own voices. It let's people know they are not alone in whatever they are dealing with, adds a touch of ambience, and can make any awkward situation not so. There are definitely negative effects to music sometimes, like listening to sad music when you're sad will most likely make you more sad. However, it speaks the words you're feeling so you can't help but to listen to it. I have so many memories that are now vivid memories due to a specific song playing which makes the thought real. Do you have any thought as to what causes the musical hallucinations?
