Sacred Space-Geographical or Something Much More?

Most people have very specific sacred spaces. Some would say the ocean, a field or farm, a theme park, their bedroom, or a religious environment. For me, I have a wide range of places that could be seen as sacred. Personally, I feel like it doesn't necessarily have to be a geographical location. I consider my girlfriends comforting embrace a sacred space. When one is in their sacred space they want to feel safe, protected, comfortable, and at ease from the stress life can bring forth. If you think about it, when you believe you're in love with someone you go to them whenever you're feeling down or stressed. You find comfort in the thought of them, and your racing thoughts become at bay when they speak. All things a sacred space offers: comfort, reassurance, and peace of mind. Wherever or with whomever you feel comfortable with being vulnerable should be classified as sacred.

From a geographical standpoint, however, I would say any body of water would be a sacred space for me. Lakes, oceans, ponds, rivers, even streams and puddles. The flowing of the water brings me a sense of positivity. I enjoy going to places like this, mainly rivers and streams, when I'm feeling lost or indecisive. I don't know where the rushing water is going, but it's going somewhere and somewhere is better than nowhere. There is a feeling of tranquility when I'm surrounded by water. The flowing, crashing, or even silence of the environment is what really does the trick. It feels like the auditory stimuli becomes in tune with my breathing patterns and begins to relax my mind.

  1. Marisa, I think you make really strong points about how your sacred space isn't necessarily a place. I completely agree 100%. I also thought it was interesting that the flowing of the water in any body of water gives you a sense of positivity. I am love the outdoors and I never thought about the effect of the water on me. Do you think that in the future you will live near water or pursue something related to water?
