The Porch Swing

When trying to think of my sacred space, the first place that came to mind was the porch swing hanging on my front porch. It is hung at the end of my porch and is painted a sharp, bright white. It's wooden and creaks a little when you rock on it, but has so much character it's hard not to love. It doesn't sound like a very unique spot, but I have such peaceful memories there. Since it's the winter, it's unfortunately too cold to go sit on my porch swing, but I always look forward to when I can again. The summer is my favorite time to use my porch swing. The weather is the perfect temperature as the roof of the porch provides shade from the shining sun. I like to wake up early in the morning, make some coffee, and go and sit on the swing and read, draw, go on my computer, or talk and eat breakfast with my family. It's such a calm, quiet spot with only the occasional car or walker passing by my house.

This space influences the rest of my life because it is a nice, peaceful way to start my morning. I'm always much more productive right after I wake up, so it allows me to get stuff done or do the things I don't usually have time to do. Sitting on my porch swing alone in the morning also gives me the opportunity to be alone for a couple hours before my family or friends wake up. I like being in the company of my family and friends, but I have always thought having time to myself  is a therapeutic and healthy thing to do. My porch swing is the perfect place for this, and it allows me to enjoy the outdoors as well. I think my sacred space has given me the opportunity to appreciate nature a little more and has made me a more relaxed person. It will always be my favorite spot, and hold a special place in my heart.

  1. I love that your sacred space is both a small thing and a big part of your life. It's really versatile, which makes it sacred in a lot of different ways. I also really like that you talk about how it's important for you to be alone sometimes. I agree with that; I think that everyone needs to find peace when they're alone so that time with family and friends is even better. Do you think that your sacred space is something that will change? For example, on your college campus do you think that you'll find a new but similar space that has the same functions as your porch swing?

  2. I had always wished that I had a porch swing at my house. They always seem to build so much character to a home. I really enjoyed the way you worded the swing, like how it sounds and the way it looks. Im happy to hear that your sacred place motivates you in such a positive way. Thank you for sharing!
