My research topic is on Greek Mythology, and I chose this because looking into different topics this one was almost jumping out at me. Through the process of looking at many different types of articles about greek literature, art, stories, gods and goddesses I found so many details I never knew existed about this topic. Greek mythology is such a brod subject matter and can be stretched much farther than many would think possible. The Greek religion used mythology as a way to answer lingering questions that kids would ask growing up, and also to talk about the community and traditions, coustoms and they way they lived.
While searching through articles I found that Greek Mythology is not based off of one work, literature or art, but from many different sources that were gathered for many years. It started off through oral literature, and their stories they told have a so called theme. The type of themes were later identified in writing for example gods and goddesses and how things were created and more. In many works of Greek Mythology there is a topic brought up about the way the universe was created and how the ancestors played a roll in how things were to have formed this was all just from all the different types of sources that started it all.
The Greek Mythology category that was very intreging to me was the Olympians. This was so interesting to me because it is based on every aspect of human life. It is said in the article i read that the olypians are actually men and woman but are allowed to change themselfs to animals and more. I really like the fact that each one of the Olympians have something very important to do and what they are based about. When I first decided to do Greek Mythology as my topic I chose to do different heros and monsters, but as I began to read I realised that so much of the Greek Mythology does have lot of background relating to the Olympians and I was intergred to learn more.
Catherine, this is fantastic! It is very interesting that you are doing your research paper on Greek Mythology because though a lot of people are familiar with some of the stories, not many have extensive knowledge on it. What I found most intriguing is when you mentioned that Olympians, though man and woman, could actually transform into animals. When I had done some research on my topic, the gods and goddess of the Celtic people were believed to transform into animals, as well. What do you think this means for our mythologies? I think they relate in the sense that people and animals for the Greeks, and gods and animals for the Celts were considered to be equals in the eyes of humans. A very interesting topic!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you when you say that Greek Mythology is such a broad topic. You can definitely go in many ways. I think is so interesting that you chose to focus on the Olympians. Have you always been interested in the Olympians when we have learned Greek Mythology in school or what it a recent interest? I am excited to read more about you exploring how the Olympians captured every aspect of human life.
ReplyDeleteI always thought Greek Mythology was very interesting and I'm happy that you find it interesting as well, and that you're finding a lot of information on it. If you could choose (which you can't haha) but if you were to choose a different topic for this project, would you stay with this topic or pick a new one? It seems like you're really invested in this! Also, have you ever learned about greek mythology before this project? If so, I'd love to hear more about it!
ReplyDeleteWhen I first chose to do Greek Mythology I, too, realized how broad of a topic it really is. At first it was hard for me, too, to narrow Greek mythology into Greek literature because of how intriguing the gods, goddesses, and heroes are. There is so much to learn about the mythology in Greece, and there is so many different ways to learn about it- through the plays, oral stories, written stories, etc. Do you think you are going to specifically narrow down your research paper topic to the Olympians? And if so, how much more narrow will you go? A specific Olympian? I am excited to see where your ideas take you in writing your research paper.
ReplyDeleteI love how much you have been learning in the just beginning parts of your research. I love how Greek Mythology does connect to many different stories and how they all come together as one big story. I like how you talk about the fact that at one point these were just simple stories that we never knew would be shared all the way until we are this age and even beyond then.
