Technology vs. Nature: friendship to enemy

I think that technology fogs our view and our connection with the natural world. Before technology, we had a friendship with the world outside. People gardened and farmed more, went outside more and the pollution was a lot less than in 2017, which says enough in itself. Technology has taken away from our relationship with the natural world and is now the main priority. When we used to be outside,  it was just man and the beauty and peace of nature. Now, you don't see people on hikes or in nature without a device (camera, phone, headphones, etc.). Although technology can help us discover more about nature through science, I believe it does more damage than good.
In my own life, I see that my 6 year old sister gets home from school and goes directly to her ipad to watch netflix. I see that my 11 year old brother gets home from school and grabs a snack and watches T.V. When i was their age i didn't have that technology. I didn't even have a phone. My older brother and I used to get home from school and go in the backyard and build forts with sticks, or go “dig a hole to China” or go adventuring on our bikes. Technology has hypnotized us into going directly to it when we are not busy with something else. I don't see kids hand-write papers anymore. Everything is digital and society believes that digital is the more intelligent and efficient way, and in some cases it is! But to an extent.. It really bothers me how reliable we have become on technology. If we don't have a computer in our home, its very hard to do our homework, if we don't know the precise location of our phones, we have a mini heart attack, if we can't find our headphones, we can't go for a jog or to the gym. Our generation especially, revolves our lives around the use of technology.

  1. I really enjoyed reading this blog post. I agree with everything you had to say, and made me sad to read that your brother and sister haven't truly experienced the fun and joy of being outside. It will be interesting to see what they will be like in the future, and how their generation will be different than ours since they grew up with so much technology. It makes me kind of scared for the future- but I think if we take small steps to change and stop using our phones so much it could make a big difference and help us to reconnect with nature.
