What Makes Us Us

To be human is to have emotion and a way of expression in any way, shape, or form. Humans experience various emotions daily, such as love, hatred, betrayal, jealousy, excitement, etc; and those feelings make us human overall. People need to have a way of expressing these internal thoughts and feelings, and I believe that the most common and easiest way to express these feelings is through art. Art can also come in any way, shape or form. Art is all around us. It could be painting, dancing, singing, common body language, the written word, or even just speaking. Art truly connects everyone in one way or another without us even realizing it. Pay attention to how someone speaks and how much you like or dislike how they act and speak. Really close your eyes and listen to your favorite song and think about how it makes you feel. Watch someones body when they're dancing. THAT is art. Not only is the person performing showing their emotion, but it could make you feel emotion as well. Acknowledge that.

To be human, means we have a purpose. We ALL have something that we live for, something that keeps us going whether it be a person, song, movie, family, education, occupations, anything really. We are all put on this Earth for a reason, all made to do and be something amazing. It doesn't have to be extraordinary, such as finding a cure to cancer. It may be as simple as being a fire fighter, a wife, a sister, a brother, a husband, a best friend. You may give someone ELSE purpose to keep going.

Although we are also very diverse, I believe that we, as humans, are obsessed with order, schedules, time, and categorizing. We are immune to acknowledging that in every day life there is commonality between all of those things. We are selfish creatures (myself definitely included), and maybe this HAS robbed us of some of our capacity for being human. We are losing compassion, emotion and the overall care for others, and those attributes are what also make us human. I'm most definitely not a pessimist towards humans, there is a large amount of beauty and harmony within us all, but I believe that we are losing the qualities that make us human rapidly in modern day, and I'm afraid that if more people don't acknowledge this and take action to change it, then we will continue to deteriorate morally and emotionally.

  1. Alyssa, of the many points made in your post, your explanation of human purpose really stood out. It is something that I had not thought of. If I may expand on your thoughts, I think that we don't know what our purpose in life is because half of its importance is not having boundaries or guidelines.
The opening paragraph had me hooked because of how you demanded me to look at art.. not just the entirety of a painting, but the small details in human art forms such as dance or literature read aloud. You had put me in a place where I could imagine myself watching someone speak and taking note of what I am thinking and feeling. You made me much more aware of what goes on in my day to day life, not just the typical forms of art we are use to analyzing. Thank you!

  2. I really enjoyed how assertive your tone of voice came across. It made me actually want to go out and do something about the deterioration of human morality. Including yourself in the paragraph about selfishness was a good choice to make because having a connection makes the discussion more realistic. My favorite part would be your paragraph about art. You brought up things that many people would consider everyday things, like talking, but instead you referred to it as art which I thought was different, but definitely something worth thinking about. Overall, this post was a good start to many more we'll have to do!

  3. I really enjoyed reading your blog post! The way your sentences flowed together was really nice and it made me keep my intrest and I wanted to keep reading even after there was nothing else to read. I like the point you made about all humans being diverse but focusing on scedules and more, because it opened my eyes to how I live my life focusing around scedules and time. I also enjoyed the point you made about purpose. I like how you included that we all have a purpose because it made be gather quoestions that I never would have actually thought about without reading your blog. This is a great first blog post!
