Research Topic: Ethical Philosophy

I have always been interested in right versus wrong, truth, and morality. I have never felt that human morality is concrete and universal; the idea of laws, therefore, is fascinating. Crafting a code of conduct for an entire community, based on societal morals and ethics, is a uniquely human action and stands out to me as one of the first things that was done in each society when written language and organized politics were established. Humans have this concept of good and evil, right and wrong, that permeates our societies in a myriad of ways. We create, not only laws, but punishments for those who break them. We establish social classes based on differing interpretations of morality. And we judge other humans based on what we consider to be right or wrong.

Because of my interest in these behaviors, I want to write my research paper about ethical philosophy, with a focus on laws and universal ethics. I plan on exploring the works of several ethical philosophers to see what scholarly speculation I can find on morality and judgement. I also want to look at laws, across cultures and time periods, and identify things that are always lawful or always illegal. I feel as if my paper will evolve to be something very specific, like the ethics of capital punishment, but I want to start with broad research and learn all that I can.

This topic has always been part of my life. My father is a defense attorney, and he has always told me about his cases and invited me to think critically about the ethics of different laws or behaviors. I now want to conduct my own research, being as unbiased as I can, so that I can dive even deeper into this philosophical area. I'm hoping to learn a lot and to be exposed to a lot of new information and opinions, and I'm excited to be able to look at justice and ethics freshly once I learn more.
