Humans and Humanity

Being human means that we go through the natural life cycle just like all other living organisms. We are born, either as a man or a woman, and we eventually die. The meaning of being a man and a woman is purely based on our physical make up. They naturally have complementary body parts to keep our species alive. This is not to say that just because we are born one or the other, that we have believe as though we are that gender. As we grow, we become conscious of our own thoughts and beliefs which can either reinforce our born gender, or disagree with it.

As humans, we have the ability to generate our own ideas and develop our own opinions. Opinions are not a bad thing at all, in fact they push us to become more humble, honest, and understanding. They also lead to great works of art and literature in forms of paintings, sculptures, scriptures, and novels. What makes us human is sharing with others our individual thoughts on these topics and many more. Other animals do not have the ability to speak their minds as we do, and so I feel as though it is unique to us as people and we shouldn't take advantage of that.

We have many great qualities that have benefited us in the past. But we are not perfect, and so a large part of being human is making mistakes and having flaws. Our selfishness and our tendency to look out for ourselves more than others, has caused us to often dismiss what needs to be done to keep our animals, our planet, and ourselves healthy, in order to gain what we want. For example, sweets are not healthy for us and our body is suffering while we get what we want. Now, this can be amplified to a much larger scale, such as the environment, but the general idea remains the same. Being human means so many different things, and there was no way that I could cover even a quarter of them. But these are just a few of my beliefs on what being human really means.

  1. This is a great post. I really like how you start with the biological aspects of humanity, and then move into the philosophical. I also love that you include our relationship with the world in your post; we have a greater awareness of the world and our effect on it than other animals, and I think it's really important that you included that. You pull from or share a lot of the ideas that we talked about in class, like our ability to communicate and our ability to make connections with other humans, and you also bring thoughts of your own, like human selfishness. All in all, this is a really interesting post!!

  2. Megan, I really enjoyed reading your thoughts about what it means to be human. I liked how you included the fact that as we grow, humans are able to develop their own set of thoughts and beliefs, even when it comes to gender. I liked that you added that thought because I know people who are transitioning, and I enjoy the fact that our society has evolved to the point where people can express their true self. In addition, you included how are opinions are a great aspect to being human; however, if we allow our opinions to become self-centered, it can ruin the very thing that is great about being human. Thank you for sharing your insights, it was very interesting and enjoyable to read!
