Our Individual Journey

The human being, Homo sapiens, is a man, woman or child that is distinguished from other animals by superior mental development, power of articulate speech, and upright stance. Although, that is just the dictionary definition. As humans, we are considered the smartest and most resourceful living beings on planet earth. This is the reason for dominating as a species over all other life forms. Humans are encouraged to create, build and expand on as much as we can. Technology, especially, is a creation we have made that has a new discovery or invention every day. It almost seems that it is in our blood to become more powerful by constantly innovating the future. But is that what it means to be a human?

Every person is built differently, and no two people are the same. Therefore, everyone has a different view on what it means to be human. Some have it all figured out, however, there is no right or wrong answer. To me, I believe every person is born with a purpose, or a task to fulfill. For example, someone who becomes a doctor as their profession, could be meant to save a certain persons life one day. But, we do not all have just one purpose, as there can be a number of things. This can be a hard concept to swallow, because we do not know our purposes. Most of the time we never realize them, or don't realize them until we are considered "older and wiser".  Although, this is one of the beauty's in life, not knowing what to expect.

As for myself, writing that we all have a purpose in life is ironic, for I do not even know my own purpose. But as I have gone through the human experience, looking back in my past, I can see little purposes I have already fulfilled. The beauty of this is not knowing you are fulfilling a purpose when it is happening. It causes the human brain to think and reflect on their life, rather than looking to the future like we always seem to do. Therefore, what it means to be human is not to continue reinventing the future, but completing our individual purpose.

  1. The way you used your honest feelings towards the idea of what it means to be human really strengthened your response and made me want to read more. I think it is really cool that you say you do not yet know your purpose(s) in life, but still believe the future holds an answer. You also did a great job drawing on the extreme differences between us and humans and all other types of animals on Earth. I like how you combined common theories, factual information and your personal experiences and insights in your response. Overall, excellent job on a compelling response giving a unique perspective to what it means to be human.

  2. Brittany, I thought this blog was extremely interesting. You made me realize that we're all still so young and that in reality, a lot of us don't know what our purpose is, and it's going to be exciting to find out in the future! I also like how you included yourself in your passage as well. Admitting to not knowing your purpose, and I think that's really hard for some people to grasp, so that gave me a lot of respect for you. I also agree with the fact that every definition of what it means to be human is neither right nor wrong. We were all raised completely different from each other, so no wonder our views will differ! I like how you put the dictionary definition in the beginning of your passage, it gave the readers (and me personally) insight as to what the definition of "human" actually was and kind of made me think "...well that's it?" I really enjoyed how this passage made me think into deeper meaning.

  3. Brittany, I really enjoyed reading your blog post. I liked how you began your post with the dictionary definition because as the definition seems simple, your post dove deeper, and shows that to be human is something that can hardly be explained by a literal definition. I also liked how you added a question in the last sentence of your first paragraph because it makes me, the reader, feel as if you were talking directly to me. One of my favorite points you included was how every person is different, which eludes too how great diversity is, and the answer to what it means to be human is different to everyone. The idea of having a purpose was an interesting idea for me, because its common to feel like you doing belong. I, too, believe in having a purpose and it's a good reminder of how as humans we have the power to do great things in the world, and the opportunities are endless. Thank you for your great insight into the question "What does it mean to be human?".

  4. I really enjoyed reading this post. I agree that everyone has a purpose in their life and we are all just figuring it out as we go along. It has made me look back and realize that even though I have been faced with difficult times, something greater has come out of those times. I also like how you included that everyone has a different perception on what it means to be human. I think this is important for people to realize and acknowledge that some people may have different views as you and that it is okay. I liked how you ended your first paragraph with a question. It made me interested in reading the rest of your response. Great response!

  5. I love the way that you were so honest and true about your feelings of the topic. How everyone is built differently, and no two people are the same. You used examples of what a human is and I think that was a nice touch. I really enjoyed reading your post, we are all born with a purpose in life and we all should live up to the potential of ourselves.
