For the research paper, I want to focus on Rap music as a platform for poetry. I've always been an avid reader of poetry and rap music has held my interest for as long as I can remember. In all honesty, I have an idea in my head of a specific route I want this paper to take, I just don't really know how to word it. Take N.W.A's album Straight Outta Compton for example. The album was found to be controversial by a large number of middle-class, suburban, white parents. While the song lyrics may have been violent at times, and implied a negative relationship with law enforcement, they provided an insight towards the everyday struggles of a man of color while allowing the artists to portray their feelings and bring light to the issues they faced in a non-violent, non-drastic way.
I want to look at rap music as a platform to broadcast human struggle in a proactive way. Through rap, people can express the realities of their everyday lives without needing or enforcing violence. I want to look at a diverse group of artists in the rap genre and analyze the impact of their lyrics on the pubic to see if any similarities arise. From this, I want to see if there is any sort of universal human reaction to human struggles. At this point, this is kind-of a melting pot of what I wish to do with my topic, but over time a more concrete thesis will be established.
This is a good idea to do your research paper on! I don't think you will get bored with this topic because theres a lot of areas to look into because includes a psychological, and sociological aspect as well. Is rap your favorite type of music? Its one of mine, and the reason is because I have gone through a lot in my life and I find that a lot of the topics rap music gives off is relatable so I can connect on a personal level and I think thats what individuals are attracted to in what genre music they listen to. I'd like to read your paper when its finished!
ReplyDeleteThis is such an interesting idea! I love that you specify that you want to look at rap as poetry, not just as an art form or musical style. I think it would be really interesting to look at the differences between rap and slam/spoken word poetry. I also love that you want to look at a really diverse group of artists. I would imagine that there's a fascinating difference between the rap music of people of color and that of white people, as well as a difference between men's rap and women's rap. I think that this is a really great idea, and I'm excited to see where you go with it!!
ReplyDeleteThis topic is so specific and definitely something I can see you doing, and doing well!! It sounds like you definitely know exactly what you want to say and how you're going to say it, you're paper is something I would TOTALLY be interested in reading. I love how you have so many examples and have a great understanding for your topic!
